Hi all

How may of you remember and were subscribers to the 'Alt' newsgroups of a decade ago. There used to the thousands of them on various topics.

I subscribed to a variety of these and the one thing that contributed to their downfall (in my eyes) was the unrestricted unsolicitus sales pitches from the subscribers in the group.

I am a member of a number of LinkedIn and other network groups with between 100 and thousands of members. A couple of these I am considering unsubscribing from because the alerts I get have dozens of posts in offering this that and the other (free or for sale offering) and that has any intrisic learning value to me.

Are / could the groups on the likes of LinkedIn etc; become of no value because of the impossibility of separating the wheat from the chaff?
