How Twitter can build your email list?
In long running science fiction series, there's always an episode where the lead characters come up against their dopplegangers. Suddenly they're in more than one place at a time. It's a great plot device but just imagine the potential of really being able to be present in multiple locations.

You can on Twitter. You can follow or join in with conversations happening simultaneously across the globe. Just let that sink in.

Terrifying? Colossal waste of time? Huge potential?

What if we make it easier and choose just one objective?

I want to build my email list using Twitter.

Here's a 19 step programme for you:
  1. You need a crystal clear target profile. Who do you want on your email list? Be specific. Visitors to Pembrokeshire, families with pre-school children, craft businesses, female entrepreneurs in Swansea, farm based businesses.
  2. Make sure your own Twitter profile speaks to that audience e.g. marketing for farm based businesses, family day out in Pembrokeshire, social media for craft makers etc
  3. Ensure you have a subscribe form set up on your website. Programmes like Mail Chimp will give you the web address (url) for your form. Essential for use on Twitter
  4. Analyze the keywords your audience will use to find you e.g. low cost marketing ideas, school holiday activities, help with Twitter.
  5. Set up key word searches on Twitter or Tweetdeck. Experiment until you find tweets from your target profile.
  6. Understand what else interests your target audience e.g. their local area, tourism events, food festivals.
  7. Search for Twitter users promoting such things and analyse their list of followers. This is the leg work. Sometimes just the Twitter profile will tell you what you need to know or you might need to visit the website to find out if that person fits your target profile.
  8. Use lists to help you organise followers.
  9. Engage in conversation offering help when you can.
  10. Reply directly to comments and questions where you have a natural business interest or can help.
  11. Common interests bring people together on Twitter as they do in real life. Reference your interests e.g. running, baking, rugby or cheese(!) when talking about your daily business activity and you'll be amazed who chips in.
  12. Promote your followers' interests but be sure you've established a connection first e.g. you are both local businesses, both interested in organic food and farming or both members of the same networking organisation.
  13. Post links to blog posts, e-news articles, photos, videos, news articles and other good content that interests your target profile.
  14. Ensure content entertains or informs your target profile and demonstrates your helpfulness, value, expertise or credibility.
  15. Use your target profile's interests or current events such as TV programmes, local or national news, seasonal celebrations to create content of interest that connects with what you do. If you're targeting parents during holidays, check on Twitter whether #holidayactivities or #halftermactivities are trending.
  16. Send teaser tweets offering goodies when they subscribe e.g. Exclusive subscriber offer out later today, 1:1 Twitter training for rural businesses. Subscribe now for details.
  17. Acknowledge and thank new followers and subscribers.
  18. Be a networker on Twitter and introduce new followers to your list.
  19. Track sign ups via Twitter and repeat activity that works (but not too often!).

Although these steps help show you how you can use Twitter to attract subscribers, don't forget that what really attracts subscribers is valuable content. Ensure your existing list likes what you do before you seek more subscribers. If people are leaving your list in droves then you aren't giving them something of value. Fix that first.
