State of the independent sector
There is huge speculation within the learning, development and training (LD&T) industry about the number, size, success and nature of independent training providers and the individuals and small businesses that make up this important group.
TrainerBase; the Association for Learning Practitioners is conducting a survey to gain a greater understanding the UK independent sector.
If you are the sole or joint proprietor, partner or director or otherwise in charge of a UK based independent training or learning and development business then you are invited to participate in our survey. It is very important for us to learn about this sector and your responses will help us greatly.
The survey will take approximately 15 minutes to complete (needs to be done in a single session). Your participation will entitle you to receive a FREE copy of the survey report (subject to you providing a legitimate email address). Non participants will be charged for the report.

Trainer Rates 2007
In the fourth of my yearly investigations into the rates being charged or perhaps secured by independent training contractors and consultants there is evidence of a continuing divide between Male and Female trainer rates and that IT trainers along with Regulatory Skills trainers get the lowest daily rate. Expansion of the questioning suggests that there is a north south divide in attainable rates and that the South of England is by far the most popular training region to find clients. Whilst there is a high percentage of Sole Traders within the training sector, these trainers do not earn as much as their Limited Liability counterparts. Anecdotal evidence suggests that earnings are being squeezed by an increasing number of jobbing or hobby trainers entering the market and charging unrealistic daily rates. What is also prevalent is that most trainers discount for volume and for the voluntary sector. Purchaser this report.
Sponsorship Survey
TrainerBase conducted a survey into the purchasing requirements of its members and has determined a significant level of benefit to services providers that support the Association. The results of this survey indicate that the membership of TrainerBase is a worthwhile targeted audience for products and services. And what is more a significant 76% of respondents indicated that they would be influenced to purchase from a Sponsor. This included 17% suggesting they would be heavily influenced and a further 13% indicating they would definitly choose a sponsor. Full details of the survey are available from TrainerBase.

Trainer Rates 2005
The training sector provide services in a range of topics classified as Soft, Management and Technical Skills. The results of this research concludes that most trainers do Associate work and that the day rate for this is close to half what they would normally charge. Technical Skill training pays the least, Female trainers are the predominant providers of Soft Skills, Male trainers still get the top rates and the average turnover for an independent contractor is hovering near or just over the VAT threshold. It also suggests that some trainers are not making their business pay, whilst a few others are spending a lot of time on income generating days.
